Medical Aid in Dying Act (A136 -Paulin/S138 -Hoylman-Sigal) would allow terminally ill patients to request medication to aid in dying (a slippery slope in assisting suicide). This DANGEROUS bill has passed both houses of the New York State Legislature. It is currently awaiting Governor Kathy Hochul’s signature to become law. If signed, it would take effect immediately and make New York the 12th state to legalize medical aid in dying.
Reasons why this bill is SO DANGEROUS:
Elderly, disabled, or low-income patients may feel pressured to choose death to avoid being a burden.
Terminal predictions can be wrong; treatments may emerge that offer more time or comfort.
Blurring ethical boundaries in medicine.
Could shift focus and funding away from improving end-of-life support.
Turns doctors into executioners.
There are no safeguards to prevent misuse of the lethal drug.

🚨Canada Passed a Similar Law in 2016…
-
-
-
- In 2016, Canada legalized Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) for adults with a serious and incurable medical condition, but only if their natural death was reasonably foreseeable.
- In 2021, that safeguard was removed. Now, individuals with chronic, but not terminal conditions can qualify for MAID. Canada is also moving toward expanding eligibility to include mental illness.
- This can be a dangerous slippery slope. What was once rare becomes routine.
